" TONK " (1995) FOR SAXOPHONE QUARTET PERFORMED BY KOH-I-NOOR SAX 4TET.
” The title refers to “Honky-tonk”, because of the rhythmical approach in this work. But also the many-voiced melodies and the specific pace / drive and polyrythms are ingredients of “Tonk” ( with a wink to the music of of Conlon Nancarrow ) .”
Kohinoor Saxophone Quartet:
Frido ter Beek - soprano

Sander Beumer - tenor
Marc Scholten - baritone
Recorded may 3rd 2003 at the Fentener van Vlissingenzaal, Utrecht by Michiel van Dijk and Perry Urlings. Edited by Frido ter Beek. Mastered by Arnout Probst at Mediatrack, Amsterdam.

WOW! This is a rather new approach. Two i.m.o very good female singers offer precisely intoned melodies(?!) & voicings routed as well as integrated in(to) contemporary operatic/chamber music. But this special kind of very dynamic chamber music here isn't executetd by chamber musicians but by electric (post-)zeuhlprog-power-trio PoiL plus a vibraphone player. Take your time to explore & fathom it. Very rewarding! ROWIAL

all of it good: the whimsy, the drama, the wild, the cosmic; deftly dancing the line between order and chaos, between the sublime and the vile, between the fathomable and the ineffable. puts the listener in a liminal limbo you don't get to be in (and still enjoy!) often. Tim Patterson
